Lesley Henderson

Lesley Henderson joined the University of Strathclyde
as Professor of Science Communication in 2022 under the Global Talent
Programme. She is internationally recognised for her research in science,
environment and public health communications and leads global research
into the social dimensions of plastic pollution (UK, Europe, Nigeria,
Indonesia and Japan). She previously held posts in Social & Political
Sciences, Brunel University London where she founded the Sustainable
Plastics Research Group (SPlash) and in Public Health & Policy at the
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She completed her PhD in
the Dept. of Sociology & Anthropology, University of Glasgow. Her
research has been used to prioritise the cultural context of plastics use,
media framing of the problem and role of communications in behaviour
change. She has advised DEFRA, the EU and UN on microplastics policy and
regulation leading to plastic-free oceans becoming a ‘cross-cutting
priority’ for the European Commission.
