Saturday 15 June 2024 (1-day course)
9am to 5pm
Crowne Plaza, Harrogate

Cost: £80pp (included in the fee: access to the course, refreshments and lunch)

Book online

The course is sponsored by the IOP Ion and Plasma Surface Interactions Group

Course objectives

  • To provide the background information on how Ion Beams might be used to assist your research
  • Give examples of the application of ion beam for analysis and modification of materials
  • Provide tutorial based examples of Ion Beam Analysis data.

Course description

This course will cover the application of ion beams to research. In particular we will cover the basic physics associated with the interaction of ion beams with solids. We will also provide examples of the application of ion implantation and irradiation for the modification of materials as well as the various methods of materials analysis available with MeV ion beams such as RBS, PIXE, ToF-ERD, NRA. We will provide examples of deterministic implantation as well as multi-modal imaging of materials employing both Ion Beam Analysis and mass spectrometry techniques.

Course content

  • Ion Implantation
  •  Ion Irradiation
  •  Ion Beam Analysis Techniques (eg RBS, PIXE, ToF ERD, NRA etc )
  •  Deterministic Implantation
  •  Multi-modal imaging and Total IBA.

Who should attend?  Aimed largely at PhD students, but open to anyone who might be interested in finding out more

Course materials.  Copies of the lecture slides, links and freely available simulation software will be provided
