Frederico Alabarse studied Physics at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre – Brazil, and holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry of Materials, obtained at Université de Montpellier, France. He joined the Synchrotron SOLEIL in 2012, with a post-doc scientific position at the Advanced Infrared Line Exploited for Spectroscopy (AILES), and took part in the project of technological development of the beamline for in situ IR-THz spectroscopy measurements under high pressure (HP) and low temperature. At SOLEIL, he starts his own research program: Pressure induced transition in materials with nanoconfined fluids. In 2014, recruited by the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), he researched neutron scattering methods in order to probe proton dynamics in hydrogenated systems under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature at the Institut de Mineralogie, Physique des Materiaux et Cosmochimie (IMPMC) of the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC/ Sorbonne Université), in Paris. This research, for which he obtained a technological development grant from the CNRS for the implementation of a pioneer heating system applied to HP cells, was carried out in collaboration with the Institut Laue-Langevin, the neutron source of Grenoble.
He is currently engaged as a Beamline Scientist of the Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, in Italy, at Xpress – the beamline dedicated to diffraction at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature. At Elettra since 2017, he leads projects of technological development of the beamline, such as powder and single crystal diffraction under high pressure (up to megabar pressures) along with variable temperatures from few to several hundred Kelvins. His current research program focuses on high pressure synthesis and characterization of novel performant materials, such as the HP insertion of guest molecules in open framework materials.
