How to get to Leeds

The University of Leeds campus is located about half a mile (0.8 km) northwest of the city centre of Leeds. Click here to find out more information about how to get to Leeds and the University.

Rail

Leeds city station can be reached from London King’s Cross in just over two hours. Booking seats is not essential on UK trains, but since services from London can be busy we recommend booking a seat if your travel agent or ticket vendor permits it. Tickets booked in advance are usually less expensive than those bought on the day.

Attendees from northwest Europe may wish to travel to Leeds by Eurostar. The change from the St Pancras Eurostar Terminal to King’s Cross station in London is very convenient since these two stations are located directly next to each other.

Air

The closest airport is Leeds Bradford (LBA), which is located about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of the centre of Leeds. It has a three-times-a-day shuttle connection with Amsterdam Schiphol as well as budget airline flights to other European destinations. The city centre can be reached by airport bus A1, which runs every 30 minutes. Tickets can be bought on the bus using a contactless card. Both the city centre and University campus are also easily reached by taxi. Arrow taxis operates a concession in the airport terminal and accept card payments.

The largest airport in the north of England, Manchester (MAN), has direct flights to a wider range of destinations. There is a railway station in the airport that connects to Leeds City station, the trip is about 90 minutes.

Attendees wishing to travel to London Heathrow (LHR) will need to travel into central London and make their way to King’s Cross station to catch a train to Leeds. Allow at least 4-5 hours for the whole trip. The quickest route is to take the Heathrow Express (15mins) to Paddington and then the Circle or Hammersmith and City line underground to King’s Cross. Alternatively, the National Express bus from the LHR terminals to Leeds is typically six and a half hours.

Car

Unfortunately, we cannot offer on-campus parking to conference attendees.

Various bus companies provide bus services as part of the West Yorkshire Metro system. The most convenient way to pay is to tap on/tap off using a contactless card/Google Pay/Apple Pay. Single fares are capped at £2.

Taxis that can be hailed on the street or picked up at an official taxi rank have a black and white livery in Leeds. There are taxi ranks at Leeds station, the University campus main entrance, and many other locations in the city centre. There are also many minicab (private hire vehicle) companies that operate in Leeds, for which a pre-booking is needed – they cannot be picked up on the street. Uber also operates in Leeds.
