Talk summary - Since the early days of quantum mechanics it was believed that only two types of particles exist: bosons (such as photons) and fermions (such as electrons). This rule-of-two follows from the three-dimensional nature of our world. However, when objects are restricted to move in two dimensions, such as on the surface of a table, new types of particles called "anyons" can appear. While originally just a theoretical fantasy, such particles have recently been observed. I will discuss the history and importance of anyons, and recent progress in putting them to practical use.
