    • Answering the question: is a PhD right for me?
    • Reflective practice to make sure you make the right decisions towards the end of your bachelor or masters degree.
    • Considering other pathways in physics
    • Introducing the PhD Guide for IOP Members

Session 2 | Tuesday 12th April, 2-3.15pm | “Preparing your PhD applications”

  • 60 minute session
  • Panel discussion and facilitated Q&A
  • PhD Applications
    • Application prep
    • Approaching supervisors
    • Drafting and submission
    • Key advice and personal experiences

Session 3 | Tuesday 12th April, 3.30-4.15pm | "Interviews"

  • 45 minutes session
  • Panel discussion and facilitated Q&A
  • Interviews
    • Preparation: key advice and tips
    • To include setting expectations, maintaining resilience and managing setbacks

Series 2: How to make the most of your PhD

Session 1 | Wednesday 20th April, 2-3.15pm | outline: “Making the most of your PhD”

  • 75 minute session
  • Presentation, panel discussion and facilitated Q&A with current PhDs and Postdocs
  • Discussion:
    • To include seeking funding and scholarships,
    • Publishing, overseas research and conferences
    • Growth mindset and professional development case studies
    • Reflections on the PhD and general advice

Session 2 | Wednesday 20th April, 3.30-4.15pm | “Maintaining resilience and wellbeing during assessments, deadlines, university study and PhD”

  • 45 minute session
  • Panel discussion and facilitated Q&A
    • To include tips to navigate stress and balancing workload
    • Maintaining resilience, wellbeing during the transition to early career / the workplace / further research

Session 3 | Thursday 21st April, 2-3pm | “Managing the transition from PhD to the next stage of your career”

  • 60 minute session
  • Panel discussion and facilitated Q&A
    • Pathways in physics for those with a PhD
    • Preparing for next steps: further research
    • Landing a job outside academia
    • Reflective practice and series conclusion
