Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Science: Reflections from a Personal and Institutional Journey

Women are increasingly shaping the scientific landscape, yet many continue to face barriers—often invisible—that hinder their ability to thrive and lead. In this lecture, Professor Rupamanjari Ghosh reflects on key milestones in her journey as a physicist and as the founding Vice-Chancellor of a research-focused private university in India, which was designated an ‘Institution of Eminence’ by the Government of India within just a few years of its establishment.

Drawing from both personal experience and institutional leadership, Professor Ghosh explores how diversity and inclusivity are not only ethical imperatives but also powerful catalysts for innovation and academic excellence. While India’s official policies on recruitment and academic practice are gender-neutral by design, she highlights how subtle, indirect forms of discrimination persist—often through unconscious bias in research environments.

She argues that the strength of a university lies in embracing the uniqueness of each individual. The goal is not uniform treatment, but the creation of equitable frameworks that acknowledge difference, respect personal choices, and cultivate the full potential of all individuals—regardless of gender. For Professor Ghosh, equity—not sameness—must be the foundation of any forward-looking academic institution, with policies that are fair, inclusive, and gender-rich rather than gender-blind.
