Terry Dicken
Charlotte Terry Dicken is a Chartered chemist and holds a BSc (Hons) degree in applied chemistry and an MSc in Instrumental chemical analysis. He has worked in the lubricants industry for almost 50 years, in research and development, technical services & marketing and technology transfer.
Currently, he is Managing Director of Global Lubricants Ltd, a speciality lubricants company he founded in the UK in 1997, but also works as an independent consultant for several companies on REACH compliance, product development and manufacturing plant construction.He has published many papers on lubrication and is a regular speaker at international conferences.
Terry has been Chairman of ELGI (European Lubricating Grease Institute) since 1998 and is also Chairman of the Institute of Energy’s cutting fluids test methods panel, STC5, a role he has fulfilled since the early 80s, and he established and was first Chairman of ASTM – M committee for aviation greases. And worked as a consultant for the NTSB on accident investigation of Alaska Airlines flight 261where greases initially were thought to be a major factor in the accident.
Abstract
Net zero in the industrial grease industry refers to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the production, use and disposal of industrial greases to net zero. This means balancing the amount of emissions released with an equivalent amount removed from the atmosphere, aiming for no net increase in carbon emissions.This presentation will discuss some of the key points about net zero in this industry:
• Industrial greases are essential lubricants used in machinery and equipment to reduce friction, wear, and corrosion.
• They are commonly used in manufacturing, automotive, mining, and many other sectors, which often operate energy-intensive processes
• The production of greases typically involves petroleum-based raw materials, which have a carbon footprint.
• Manufacturing processes may consume significant energy, often from fossil fuels.
• Disposal and leakage of greases can harm the environment.
How can we achieve net zero? Using bio-based or renewable raw materials instead of petroleum-based oils. Upgrading manufacturing plants to use renewable energy and increase energy efficiency. Developing longer-lasting greases, reducing the frequency of replacement and waste. More of a challenge is enhancing recycling, reuse, and proper disposal methods to reduce the environmental impact. Investing in projects that remove or reduce emissions elsewhere to balance out remaining emissions.
Many leading grease manufacturers have pledged support for net zero targets as part of broader corporate sustainability strategies. Collaboration with manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and end users to optimise lubrication practices and reduce overall emissions is extremely important. This presentation will highlight the work of the ELGI Sustainability Consortium (ELGISTC) which is working worldwide with all sectors or the industry to reduce emissions and reduce energy consumption to achieve net zero.
