Ian gained his degree and PhD in physics in 1984 and 1987 respectively, and has spent most of his 33 year career carrying out research into, and developing, energy efficient lubricants. He also sat on the Strategic Advisory Group for heavy duty vehicles for the Energy Technology Institute (ETI, https://www.eti.co.uk/) from 2014 to 2019, and the aim of the ETI was to reduce the CO2 impact of heavy duty vehicles in the UK by 30% by 2030. He is active in the field of tribology - the science of friction, lubrication and wear - and has published over 70 peer reviewed papers in this area, and also sits on the Institute of Physics Special Interest Group on Tribology.
