Dr Zoe Emerland
My name is Dr Zoe Emerland, I am the Lab Supervisor for the HyperVelocity Impact and Space and Planetary Environments Laboratories at the Open University in Milton Keynes. I completed my PhD at the Open University in 2023 entitled “An experimental and numerical assessment of ejected martian biosignatures impacting Phobos”, following a BSc in Geology with Planetary Science from the University of Manchester. Following my PhD, I joined the Technical support team within the School of Physical Sciences at the Open University focussed on managing the operation, maintenance, health & safety and research projects using the range of extreme condition simulation facilities within the HVI & SPE Labs.
The flagship instruments within the laboratory include the All-Axis Two-stage Light Gas Gun (AALGG) and “George” the Large Dirty Mars Chamber. The lab includes several other extreme simulation instruments with adaptability to a broad range of testing conditions within industries including Space, Technology, Aerospace, Automotive, Food & Drink, Cosmetics, Utilities and more. I aim to present the facilities we have, recent projects we have hosted and my recent efforts to broaden our reach beyond academic research within the Space industry, to more commercial opportunities.
