The National Physical Laboratory

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK’s National Metrology Institute founded in 1900 and owned by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), provides world-leading measurement science from its base in Teddington and regional sites across the UK.

NPL’s Quantum Programme bridges the gap between research and industry by offering the facilities, expertise and assurance needed to accelerate quantum innovation from lab to market-helping companies de-risk, validate and commercialise with confidence. NPL works with UK industry, government and international bodies to shape trusted, consensus-based standards that underpin the global quantum landscape, ensuring UK stakeholders have a strong voice in building interoperability and confidence in quantum technologies.

NPL also plays a critical role in enabling evidence-based decision making across quantum technology domains. In quantum computing, we drive the development and adoption of trusted metrics and benchmarks that validate performance and support scalable innovation. In quantum communications, we provide independent assurance for components and protocols, ensuring security, interoperability and readiness for deployment through the dissemination of standards.

The National Quantum Computing Centre

The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is the UK’s national lab for quantum computing, dedicated to accelerating the development of quantum computing by addressing the challenges of scaling up the technology. The centre is working with businesses, government, and the research community to deliver quantum computing capabilities for the UK and support the growth of the emerging industry.

The NQCC’s programme is being delivered jointly by UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) research councils, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). It is a part of the National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP) to develop and deliver quantum technologies across the areas of sensing, timing, imaging, communications and computing.

The centre is headquartered in a purpose-built facility on STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory site at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire.
