Physics on Film is the only film festival dedicated to physics. It will be held at the Institute of Physics (IOP), London, on 17 May 2025. The festival is founded to provide family entertainment and education, including documentaries, sci-fi, and physics-inspired art.

In the words of Sheldon Cooper, "physics encompasses the entire universe. From quantum particles to supernovas. From spinning electrons to spinning galaxies.” The festival will showcase talented movie makers who cover a wide range of physics.

For viewers the festival will include:

  • Morning session (10.00-12.30) for the film festival programme of winning and shortlisted films
  • Afternoon session (13.00 – 17.00) in which “The Martian” by Ridley Scott (2015) will be shown, followed by a discussion panel of Mars experts and the filmmakers of The Martian.

Tickets can be purchased for £10 per person for the entire day, which includes drinks, popcorn, and hot dogs.

We accept film contributions via FilmFreeway (https://filmfreeway.com/PhysicsonFilm) for budding filmmakers. We invite entries for amateur and professional films related to all areas of physics in both documentary and fiction categories.

As 2025 is the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), we invite all forms of quantum inspired films for a special Quantum Film category. There are prizes for the best judged entries in each category.

Looking forward to seeing you at Physics on Film!
