Peiyu Chen is a University Teacher (teaching-focused Lecturer) at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield. Peiyu obtained her BA and MSci degrees in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 2014, specialising in Materials Science. She then worked as a Graduate Engineer at Morgan Advanced Materials PLC (2014–15), before she completed her DPhil in Materials at the University of Oxford (2015–19). Following this, Peiyu continued as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford (2019–21), during which time she was awarded a David Cockayne Junior Research Fellowship and several College Lectureships.
During her DPhil, she mainly worked on the synthesis and characterisation of epitaxial nanocrystals and nanomaterials using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Her work focuses on the influence of the substrate on the shapes of supported nanocrystals, which yields a platform for the growth of tailored nanomaterials for electronic and catalytic applications. This extends into her postdoctoral work on the surface science of solid-state lithium batteries, which investigates the fundamental processes taking place at the lithium/electrolyte interface in order to find solutions for dendrite growth and high interfacial resistance.
