Joe Smerdon completed his BSc, PhD and first postdoc in Liverpool under the guidance of Prof. Ronan McGrath. He then moved to Argonne National Laboratory to develop a new kind of optical-access scanning tunnelling microscope. He began his current position at University of Central Lancashire in 2013, where he is now Deputy Head of the School of Natural Sciences.
His research interests focus primarily on scanning tunnelling microscopy of materials of interest to energy, with a strong emphasis on studying and designing new and exotic materials. Research highlights include the first observation of a templated quasicrystalline molecular film, and the best-performing (at the time) nanoscale molecular rectifier.
