Michael Drury, UK Atomics

Michael is the Managing Director of UK Atomics developing the Thorium Waste Burner to help decarbonise the hard to abate industries and provide low cost energy. Previously Michael held roles as MD of reactor vendors and has represented the UK on Advanced Nuclear Technologies for both SMR and AMR on behalf of UK government at the IAEA. He led the Newbuild, SMR and AMR teams as account director for the UKs National Nuclear Laboratory working across multiple reactor technologies and has held senior positions within industry such as the chair of the UK Molten Salt Technology Platform. He has worked on major projects such as Chernobyl NSC, ITER Fusion programme, Magnox decommissioning programmes and the existing fleet of UK AGR reactors and PWR reactor at Sizewell B. Having started his career in automotive at Jaguar Landrover delivering 6-sigma investigations and volume production, he is now focussed on advanced modular reactors; a Thorium molten salt reactor, providing thermal heat and power for deployment in the UK


George Swalwell, Newcleo

George is a Licensing Engineer with Newcleo where he has worked on several projects to seek the required permission for deployment of Lead-cooled Fast Reactor (LFR) technology in the UK. He has been in the nuclear industry for 8-years, since graduating with BSc in Physics from the University of Kent. This experience includes completion of the Nuclear Engineering Graduate Scheme with the Ministry of Defence and the NTEC MSc at the University of Manchester. Before joining Newcleo, George was a Nuclear Safety Inspector with the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator.


Sophie Whitehead, Newcleo

Sophie is the Project Manager for Generic Design Assessment and Safety Case activities for newcleo’s LFR-200 reactor deployment in the UK. Prior to joining newcleo in May 2023, Sophie spent 9 years with Atkins. She began her career supporting safety case projects across UK clients in the new build and fuel cycle markets before moving to the UAE to support the Barakah programme in various project engineering, project management, and framework management roles. Sophie returned to the UK in 2021, into a role as programme manager for the HPC safety case. Sophie has a Master’s Degree in Physics from the University of Manchester.
