Matthew Hills, STFC

Matt Hills is a cryogenic engineer, specialising in miniature, long life coolers for space applications. Having completed a PhD in novel heat switch technology for Adiabatic Demagnetisation Refrigerators at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, he joined the Cryogenics and Magnetics Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, where he has worked on cryogenic technologies for a number of space missions. His current work focuses particularly on Joule-Thomson (JT) cryocoolers and he is part of a small team that will deliver the JT cooler for the European Space Agency’s Ariel mission, which is due to launch in 2029 and will characterise the atmospheres of over 1000 exoplanets.

Professor Jon Prance, Lancaster University

Jon Prance is a Professor of Experimental Physics at Lancaster University. His research concerns the low temperature properties of nanoscale structures, including quantum dots, 2D materials, superconducting devices, and mechanical resonators. At low enough temperatures, quantum mechanical phenomena dominate the behaviour of these systems and this can be exploited to build new devices to advance computation, metrology, and sensing. He is currently working on techniques to reach temperatures below 1 millikelvin inside nanoelectronic devices.
