AMG Prizes

There are two prizes awarded annually by the IOP Applied Mechanics Group, the details can be found below.

The deadline for submission of nominations is the 30th March 2026.

Terms of Reference

Two prizes are awarded annually for early-career physicists, mathematicians, materials scientists, and engineers from academia and industry, for outstanding contributions to the field of Applied Mechanics.

The prize will include registration and a contribution towards costs to deliver a Semi-plenary talk at the Innovations in Applied Mechanics Conference (IAM 2026).   Certificates will be awarded to the winners.

Eligibility

Eligible nominees are early-career researchers working in the areas of applied mechanics in any institution in the UK or Ireland. Early-career in this context applies to those individuals who are either within seven years of completing their PhD or who are within ten years of first beginning work in the research or application of physics if they do not have a PhD (in all cases allowing for career breaks). An individual can only be nominated once for each award. However, an unsuccessful candidate will be carried over for one year.

Those who are currently paid employees of the Institute, members of Council, members of the awarding Group’s committee, and those under contract to the Institute are not eligible for awards.

Nomination process

Two nominators are required.  At least one should be from an institution that is not the nominee’s current employer. One nomination must be from an IOP member/fellow preferably a member of the IOP Applied Mechanics Group.

To nominate someone, please complete the nomination form and send it by e-mail to the Group secretary (Carol Featherston, FeatherstonCA@cardiff.ac.uk) before the deadline stated above.

Selection process A three-member Prize Panel, drawn from group committee members, will be nominated.  This sub-committee will then review all nominated applications. The panel will base their evaluation primarily on the overall quality of relevant contributions made by nominees and not simply on quantitative measures.

The Group intends that each prize will be awarded to one recipient. However, in exceptional circumstances, the award may be shared. In the event that the members of the sub-committee are unable to agree, the final decision will rest with the Committee Chair.

GDPR Compliance

The IOP Applied Mechanics Group committee will be reviewing all submitted applications. The data submitted will be used to determine the awardees. The nomination forms will be retained for up to one year, after which point, any personal data will be deleted.
