About

The Shock Waves and Extreme Conditions Group at the Institute of Physics is a specialised community that consists of experts from industry and academia focused on the behaviour of materials under extreme conditions from dynamic through to static events. The group acts as a link between physicists and scientists from different technological fields to facilitate multi-disciplinary research and discussions concerning experimental and theoretical developments. The group focus areas include static high pressures, shock waves, blast and energetic materials, materials characterisation across a range of strain rates, and the effects of high-energy and high-rate energy deposition.

As part of our activities, we are organising a series of institutional talks delivered by experts in the field. These events are designed for the physics and research community, current students, and early career scientists. This talk will be delivered by Dr Hugo Doyle, Head of Experimental Physics at First Light Fusion. This start-up was spun out of Oxford University in 2012, and uses projectile fusion as a new approach to inertial fusion that is thought to be simpler, more energy efficient and with lower physics risks. The speaker will cover the technology underpinning projectile fusion, the company history, and the skillsets and expertise involved in this research. For further information, please contact the SWEC Group Secretary, Dr Alexandra Iordachescu (a.iordachescu@bham.ac.uk).
