Invited Speakers


Dr Steve Barrett is a research team leader at Arcadia Impact, running and contributing to projects that address AI safety and governance. Key areas of focus have included building and critiquing arguments for AI system safety, applying systems thinking to hazard identification, as well as cybersecurity-related misuse of AI. He has also worked in automotive and enterprise cybersecurity, safety assurance in the automotive sector, and has many years of experience in the information and communications technology sector. He has a strong track record in innovation and has spent over 20 years in research team leadership, standardisation, and systems engineering roles. Steve has an MBA and a PhD in communication engineering.

 

Maya Carlyle is the Principal AI Engineer at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and a passionate advocate for ethical AI and inclusive innovation. Leading the development of trustworthy AI infrastructure, her work focuses on enabling safe and effective adoption of Generative AI across scientific and business domains. Her current research explores the human–AI communication gap—how implicit, self-centric language leads to misinterpretation by AI systems—and how to improve machine understanding. Maya regularly advises government bodies on AI bias, trustworthiness, and risk. With over two decades of experience in AI, software engineering, and digital transformation, she has founded an AI development company in Asia, delivered voice analysis algorithms for government applications, and contributed to genetic marker identification for drug responses at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.


Andrew Hanson MBE has served as National Physical Laboratory (NPL) Outreach Manager for almost 20 years and is an ardent advocate of scientific public engagement and communication. Leading national-level public engagement initiatives and delivering thousands of educational activities for audiences ranging from primary schools to professional societies, he has personally delivered over 2,000 events. Andrew has published research papers, book chapters, and international technical reports, and served in leadership roles including Chair of the Colour Group of Great Britain. He was awarded an MBE for services to STEM (2019), has contributed to major Royal Society exhibitions, and co-created award-winning science education films.
