This one-day meeting will explore the concept of competence in the field of physics to highlight the importance of not just knowledge and skills, but also understanding and competence in producing successful physics graduates. During the meeting there will be discussions on the outcome of university study of physics, including understanding, competence, problem-solving, creativity, and personal qualities. It will delve into the difference between internal and external learning outcomes, the psychology of learning, and the importance of teamwork and inclusivity. It will also refer to the results of previous investigations of competence-based teaching.
In addition, we will explore what students and academic staff want from a physics course, and the qualities employers look for in physics graduates. It will provide insights on how to help students acquire understanding and competence through effective teaching methods and learning experiences, and how competence can be assessed.
