This webinar will consist of an institutional talk from AWE Nuclear Security Technologies describing some of the impact facilities and recent work relevant to the Shock Waves and Extreme Conditions group of the IOP. Primarily focussed on plate impact facilities this talk will present highlights of gas gun capabilities, high speed diagnostics and experimental methodologies for fundamental scientific studies on the dynamic strength, failure and equation of state of materials.
Drawing on examples from recent studies, the seminar will highlight the breadth of research underway, particularly in addressing the challenges associated with the multiscale nature of dynamic strength and supporting hydrocode modelling of complex loading conditions. Examples will include multiple-sample reverse impact Taylor tests, dynamic hole collapse and shear failure, Richtmyer-Meshkov instability growth experiments, and ramp-loaded dynamic X-ray digital image correlation tests undertaken at the ESRF.
