Hi, my name is Tom, my research focuses on integrated silicon photonics, combining existing devices with new phase change materials to replicate quantum systems on a chip. I’m from Redhill in Surrey, I moved to Southampton where I studied for my masters in Physics with Photonics. I’m still at Southampton University, where I now study for a PhD in Physics within the Integrated and Quantum Nanophotonics groups.
Abstract:
I will introduce some key principles of general quantum simulations, before outlining a few common experimental realizations of analog quantum systems. I will also explain the approach taken within my research groups, using novel phase change materials to tailor the transmission characteristics of integrated photonic devices in order to create analog quantum simulators. This work provides the building blocks for many interesting avenues of science, such as optical neural networks and speed of light matrix calculations.
