Aegiq

Dr Charlotte Ovenden is a Senior Photonics Engineer at quantum technology start-up, Aegiq. She originally studied chemistry and after completing her undergraduate degree worked in industry. She later returned to academia and undertook a PhD and postdoctoral research at The University of Sheffield, where her focus was on the scalable growth of single photon sources for integration into quantum photonic devices.

Abstract:

Single photon sources are a vital component for numerous quantum technologies, with semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) being an ideal candidate of use. These QDs can be epitaxially grown using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) or metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE). However, scaling the growth process while still producing QDs with ideal properties, remains a challenge. In this talk, I’ll discuss my experiences of PhD life while working towards a solution to this problem, using a technique called site-controlled quantum dot growth.
