Join us in London for an exclusive in-person celebration of a century of Quantum Physics - Past, Present, and Future
As part of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the Institute of Physics invites you to a special community celebration that traces the remarkable journey of quantum physics-from its origins to its transformative potential for the decades ahead. The two-day conference will explore both the historical context and future potential of quantum science and technology.
Day One: The first 100 years
The opening day-organised by the History of Physics Group–will reflect on the first 100 years of quantum mechanics, revisiting its foundational breakthroughs-from Heisenberg, Schrödinger and Dirac to EPR and Bell’s inequalities and beyond. The evolution of quantum theory will be charted from its early abstract framework, with associated conceptual difficulties, to today’s unifying pillar of modern physics, which underpins many fields from condensed matter to particle physics and the technologies that enabled the digital revolution. The day will end with an exploration of how quantum technologies could be used at the frontiers of physics to explore the mysteries of our Universe.
Day One: Evening Reception
Day one will conclude with an evening reception. Drinks and light bites provided.
Day Two: Our quantum future
Looking ahead, the second day-organised by the quantum Business Innovation and Growth Group-will focus on the future of quantum science and its expanding role in technology and society. Plenary talks and panel discussions will explore frontier topics in quantum computing, sensing, and communication, alongside insights from industry leaders and conversations on innovation, workforce, and sustainability. You will hear from leading scientists, business and government representatives and you will meet the next generation of quantum researchers and innovators.
Join us to celebrate the legacy of quantum mechanics and explore how its next chapter will shape science, innovation, and society. Whether you're a physicist, technologist, engineer, or simply curious about the future of quantum, this event promises deep insights and vibrant discussions with leading figures in the field.
