QENS

The QENS conference series was born in 1992 in Windsor, UK, with the main purpose of discussing the broad spectrum of scientific research which requires knowledge of material dynamics, enabled by the technique of quasi-elastic neutron scattering. In 2024 we will bring QENS back to the UK, this time to Manchester, to hold the 16^th edition of the series. We wish to highlight recent advances in instrumentation and the scientific advances that the QENS technique has enabled, and discuss future needs for our community and emerging fields where QENS can make an impact. It will offer a platform for discussion and exchange of scientific ideas among the experts in this field. It will provide an overview to newcomers about the capabilities of QENS in exploring dynamic and relaxation processes of novel materials.

The following scientific topics will be covered:

• Dynamical processes in soft matter, including polymers, gels, liquid crystals, self-assembled materials, colloids, etc.
• Dynamics in biological and bio-related systems, including proteins, lipids, etc… and their relation to activity, functions and transport properties
• Role of dynamics in systems of medical relevance
• Dynamics of water or other polar or amphiphilic liquids under different environments
• Relaxation phenomena during glass formation for various glass materials
• Dynamics in liquids, ionic liquids, or other complex fluids
• Dynamics of ionic and protonic conductors, and electrolytes
• Dynamics in catalytic or energy storage materials
• Dynamics of novel materials for industrial applications
• Lattice dynamics and Spin dynamics of magnetic systems
• QENS instrumentation and sample environment
• Complementary techniques including theory and computational methods

WINS

The 11th Workshop on Inelastic Neutron Spectrometers will cover innovative aspects of neutron instrument design as well as report on progress of new spectrometer projects across the neutron facilities worldwide. We wish to highlight the tremendous innovation and advance in instruments in recent years, and discuss the possibilities for the future, especially with the number of large projects in sight. As in previous editions, the theme of “New idea, New concept, New design, New instrumentation for New sciences” will be followed. New developments in the application of polarization analysis, magnetic field, pressure, or improvements in sample environments for soft matter systems will be covered. Software for data acquisition, analysis and instrument simulation will be also part of the programme.

The workshop will consider:

• New ideas, new concepts and new designs for neutron spectrometers
• Novel devices, detectors and sample environments: polarization, magnetic field, pressure, soft matter environments
• Software for data acquisition and analysis, and instrument simulation

Why a joint QENS/WINS?

QENS focusses on the discussion and exchange of scientific ideas related to the investigation of atomic and molecular motions, while WINS deals with instrumental aspects of quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Though originally QENS and WINS were held independent of each other, the added value of their joint celebration was acknowledged in 2012, and continues today, since it enhances their scope and impact on the scientific community related with the quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques.
