This meeting marks the retirement of Professor Dame Athene Donald FRS as a Professor of Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, and is jointly sponsored by the Institute of Physics’s Polymer Physics Group and Biological Physics Group.

The meeting will include a retrospective of Athene’s career, and technical sessions on topics to which Athene has contributed so much:

  • polymer physics
  • the electron microscopy of materials
  • biological physics.

It will also include two panel discussions on the science policy issues that Athene has contributed so much to:

  • The benefits of interdisciplinary working for science, and the institutional and cultural barriers that stand in its way
  • Raising the profile of equality, diversity and inclusion in science – how far have we come, and what remains to be done?
