"Cyclus" is a film that pays homage to the moon and its influential cycle. Inspired by Roland Barthes' concept of 'punctum,' this project focuses on the small, emotionally charged details that unconsciously affect us. This fascination forms the core of my artistic mission: to visually translate the moon's tranquility and meditative power.
My inspiration for "Cyclus" stems from personal dreams and historical sources. As a child, I often dreamed of zooming in on asphalt, which I now recognize as an early form of my artistic fascination with detail. These dreams shaped my perspective, much like the detailed plaster models of the moon from 1874, created by James Nasmyth and James Carpenter, sparked my interest in the moon. The moon, with its scientific, mythical, and spiritual dimensions, has always profoundly influenced humanity.
In various cultures, the moon is seen as a symbol of female wisdom, virginity, and cycles. From the Incas to the Aztecs, from the Sumerians to the Greeks, moon gods and goddesses have inspired countless myths explaining natural phenomena and life cycles. These mythologies play a significant role in the symbolism of "Cyclus."
The film follows the moon through its four phases: new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter. This cycle, which lasts 29.5 days, significantly impacts both nature and humans. By following these cycles, we can develop a deeper awareness and stronger connection with nature and ourselves.
"Cyclus" is a 6-minute visual journey that takes the viewer through the complete lunar cycle. Beginning and ending with the new moon, the film creates a trance-like experience through close-up shots and a rotating celestial body inspired by the moon and its landscape. These images vary from calm and blurry in black and white at the beginning, to intense and colorful during the full moon, and return to the calmness of the start. The music by Patrick Housen and Dries Geusens plays a crucial role in enhancing the meditative atmosphere and depth of the images, fully immersing the viewer in a dream world.
My intention with "Cyclus" is to make the audience aware of the meditative power of the moon and its cycles, inviting them to a deeper understanding and connection with the natural world. Through this film, I aim to bring the viewer closer to themselves and the rhythms of nature, offering a soothing and reflective experience.
