Iakovos Tzanakis is a Professor in Engineering Materials in the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at Oxford Brookes University. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford, in the Department of Materials, and at Bournemouth University, in the Department of Design and Engineering.
Iakovos studied Mechanical Engineering in Greece in 2005, followed by an MSc from the University of Strathclyde, and a PhD from Bournemouth University in 2010.
After 2 years as a Research Fellow at Bournemouth, Iakovos joined Brunel University London in 2013 as a Research Fellow for the UltraMelt project, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Iakovos came to Oxford Brookes as a lecturer in 2016. He has continued to carry out research alongside his teaching and supervision, and received his Professorship in 2019 (at the age of 38). He is an internationally recognised scientist in bubble dynamics, ultrasonic processing and materials characterisation.
In 2017 at Oxford Brookes, he created a state-of-the art multi-disciplinary ultrasonic research facility with the scope of his research ranging from materials processing to materials cavitation resistance.
Iakovos is a Principal Investigator in a number of EPSRC, EU and Royal Society projects and his work has featured in more than 80 research publications.
In 2021, his research into the effectiveness of vertical wind turbines compared with traditional windmill turbines received global coverage from more than 200 media outlets including those in the UK, USA, China, Australia and Germany.
