Kareem Elsayad heads the Laboratory for High-resolution Optical Microspectroscopy Applications at the Center for Anatomy & Cell Biology of the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. His research is largely concerned with developing novel wavelength and time-resolved optical spectroscopy techniques for studying dynamic structure in living systems, and where relevant translating these to medical applications. One area of active research is Brillouin Light Scattering Microspectroscopy, which measures the coupling of light to hypersonic acoustic modes in a material, allowing one to extract the microscopic viscoelasticity. He received a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from Indiana University Bloomington, was a postdoctoral fellow at the Research Instiutute of Molecular Pathology, and led the Advanced Microscopy Facility at the Vienna Biocenter, prior to his appointment at the Medical University of Vienna.
