Several nuclear reactor vendors have expressed interest in bringing their technologies to the UK in what is an exciting time for the UK Nuclear Industry. This webinar features talks from two companies developing new reactor designs with their sights set on building in the UK. They will be discussing their technology and plans to bring a plant to completion.

Michael Drury of UK Atomics will discuss taking a Product Led approach to the development of innovative advanced nuclear reactors, scaling up from prototype components to 1 reactor per day factory production, and turning the current model upside down. He will address questions including: how design choices and approach impact the cost of energy, waste and long-term impacts for the economy, the environment, and decarbonising the hardest-to-abate sectors. UK Atomics is a subsidiary of Copenhagen Atomics and is working to deploy thorium reactors. The key technologies and components have been developed, tested and validated during the last 8 years. UK Atomics collaborates with leading UK universities to validate molten salt reactors technologies.

Sophie Whitehead and George Swalwell of Newcleo will provide an overview of Newcleo’s LFR-AS-200 reactor and road to deployment in the UK, with a focus on the novel aspects of the technology and how Newcleo’s approach, and in particular their integrated multi-staged R&D programme aims to address the challenges in deploying novel technology. Newcleo was launched in 2021 and is a UK-based privately owned and financed company driving innovation in the nuclear energy sector through deployment of their lead-cooled fast reactor technology. Newcleo’s first step in the UK is to deploy a 200MWe LFR-AS-200 first commercial (FCU) unit by the early 2030s.
