Memristor 2024, hosted by the IOP Dielectrics and Electrostatics Group, is the second one-day event aimed at uniting researchers intrigued by memristive technologies. The conference spans topics from new material and device design to systems and algorithms, aiming to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue from fundamental physics to practical applications. This approach seeks to link researchers across the field, encouraging the emergence of new, productive collaborations in memristor research.
Over the past two decades, memristors have captivated a diverse range of research communities, including mathematicians, solid-state physicists, material scientists, electrical engineers, and more recently, computer scientists and computational neuroscientists. The technology remains highly relevant, offering solutions to various challenges posed by the current limitations of CMOS electronics.
Memristive technologies offering unique advantages such as high integration capability, stable non-volatile resistance states, fast resistance switching and device operation, and excellent energy efficiency. These features make memristors highly appealing for the next generation of memory technology. Furthermore, memristors can be used as a platform for analogue computing or even further, to directly implement neuromorphic functions, notably synapse-like plasticity and neuron-like integration and spiking, thereby laying the groundwork for future Artificial Intelligence systems.
The underpinning physics of materials in memristors is equally fascinating. Detailed chemical, structural, and electrical characterisations reveal dynamic materials that respond remarkably to electrical, magnetic or optical stimuli. Gaining a deeper understanding of how materials properties, chemical bonds and microstructure influence the functionality and properties of these devices is crucial.
The IOP Dielectrics and Electrostatics Group is honoured to organize the Memristor 2024 international conference.
