Are you aiming to take a medical device to market?

This forum is for understanding the challenges, considering physics solutions and exploring business development opportunities within the Medical Physics sector. We will leverage the expertise of panel members who have already brought physics-based medical devices to market, have struggled, have succeeded, have failed and, most importantly, have learned from their journey. The panel comprises experts from healthcare providers, academia and industry.

This forum will give a top-level view of what it takes to commercialise a medical device within the UK (UKCA), European (MDR) and US (FDA) regulatory landscapes, covering timing, funding, skills required, deliverables and how to plan to get the best result.

Expect to leave with insight as to what it takes to get a medical device to market, a better understanding of the costs and resources involved, possible exit strategies and what it will take if you really want to go in for the long haul (i.e. if you are determined to be the CEO of a global MedTech company).

This event is aimed at those who are thinking about spinning a technology / technologies out of university research departments, those who have already embarked on the journey, innovative thinkers in large corporations who have a great idea which could impact healthcare, and those who are seeking guidance in this area. We welcome all members of the medical physics community

About the panellists

Dr Philip Marsden

The briefing will be chaired by Dr Philip Marsden, a technology consultant (and Managing Director of Unitive Design & Analysis Ltd) who specialises in bringing complex electronic and photonic devices into regulated environments such as the medical device industry. He has a PhD in semiconductor physics, has been a member of the IOP since 1993, and is the former chair of the IOP Medical Physics Group.

Dr Anna Barnes

Anna is currently Director of the King’s College Technology Evaluation Centre. She trained in medical physics in Glasgow and became a Clinical Scientist in 1999 after completing her training in Biomedical Engineering and Equipment Management and completing her PhD in advanced methods

in Neuroimaging for neurology and psychiatry. She continued her career in neuroimaging as a research fellow at institutions in the US and UK.

Dr Kunal Vyas

Kunal is Director of Surgical Solutions Research at Telix Pharma, developing medical devices that enable surgeons to locate cancer cells using diagnostic imaging drugs, leading to higher precision surgery and better patient outcomes. While working for a product development consultancy, Kunal designed and built the world’s first surgical Cerenkov luminescence imager, which was used in a first-in-human case in 2012. Kunal has a background in physics, with a doctorate from Cambridge and over 14 granted patents.

Professor Ben Varcoe

Ben is a professor in the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leeds. He is a fellow of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and member of its College of experts. Ben is one of the leading experimentalists of precision measurements in the UK and has applied the principles of quantum metrology to several applications, including magnetocardiography.
