Welcome

Throughout history, physics has transformed our world and will continue to transform our world in the coming years. But the UK’s ability to harness the benefits of this transformation, and respond effectively to the challenges facing society, depends on an effective R&D system.

To unlock the potential of physics, we are creating a blueprint for physics R&D which will highlight the changes needed to create a thriving R&D ecosystem. The first part of the blueprint will launch on 21 September.

To mark the occasion, we are holding a panel discussion to explore some of the themes which arose during our consultation with the R&D. In this conversation, we will explore:

  • The importance of and potential mechanisms for unlocking private sector R&D investment, and

  • The paradox of disruptive ideas requiring a stable environment in which to prove their worth.

The event will be chaired by Dr Anjana Ahuja,Science Commentator, Financial Times

Panellists include:

  •  Matt Burnett, Head of Science and Technology, Onward
  • Dr George Dibb, Head of Centre for Economic Justice, IPPR
  • Jocelyn Monroe, Professor of Particle Astrophysics, Royal Holloway University
  • Nicola Eckersley-Waites, Head of Innovation, CBI

The Rt Hon Lord Willetts will also give a keynote address.

We would be delighted if you could join us for this important discussion.
