How to Code - three part webinar series


A new webinar series for IOP members to develop knowledge, skills and networks for their career. In this new series, we will explore ways to approach and start coding, developing core skills for your studies and early career jobs that will make you more employable and effective in physics based sectors.

Workshop programme

Workshop 1: What is good code?

This workshop will help you to start to understand how good code is written. We will look at the requirements for writing good code and how they can be implemented. Specifically, this session will look at naming conventions, comments, readability and style guides. By the end of this session, you will be able to write meaningful variable names and comments and understand how to make your code readable. 

Workshop 2: Modular design

This workshop will show you how to write modular code. We will look at the pros and cons of modular design, the component parts and how to practically code in this style with a live coding. By the end of this session, you will understand how to split your code into modules and how to run a series of modules. 

Workshop 3: Writing code

This workshop will prepare you for writing real code to be used in systems. We will cover version control, testing, documentation and programming in a team. By the end of this session, you will understand the importance of version control and how to write good tests for your program.
