Medical Physics in the East Midlands

The IOP East Midlands Branch and the IOP Medical Physics Group are proud to host a free regional event celebrating Medical Physics in the East Midlands. The event is aimed at members of the IOP and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).

The goal of the event is to highlight the diverse and impactful work taking place in medical physics across the East Midlands and to strengthen connections within the community.

Programme Highlights

Afternoon session (arrival from 1pm, tours begin at 2pm):

1.   Tour of the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre (IOP/IPEM members only)

A guided visit showcasing one of the UK’s leading centres for imaging research and clinical innovation.

2.   Invited Talks (IOP/IPEM members only)

We are delighted to confirm participation from leading researchers across East Midlands universities.

  • Professor Alan Perkins (University of Nottingham) and Professor John Lees (University of Leicester) will explore how collaboration between clinical, academic, and industrial partners can accelerate the translation of new technologies into clinical practice.
  • Professor Eef Hogervorst (Loughborough University) will present innovative work on computerised diagnostic algorithms and non-invasive assessment tools aimed at the early detection of dementia.
  • Dr Bart Vorselaars (University of Lincoln) will introduce a groundbreaking medical imaging technology with the potential to transform cancer treatment.

3.   Poster session (open to IOP/IPEM members and general public)

We want to celebrate the full breadth of medical physics research in the region, so we welcome all poster submissions, from very early-stage fundamental research to improvements in current clinical practice. You are welcome to bring a poster that has already been presented elsewhere. Posters can be submitted by individuals at any career stage, including trainees, undergraduates, and postgraduate taught students.

A certificate and small prize will be awarded to the best poster, as judged by the event organising committee.

Networking Opportunities

Throughout the event there will be opportunities to engage with professionals and students who share an interest in medical physics.

Please visit our separate event webpage for details about the evening session which is open to members of the IOP and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), as well as members of the public who are working in or have an interest in the field of medical physics.
