Dr Chris Muirhead

Chris came to Birmingham in 1968 as a research student under the supervision of Prof. W.F. (Joe) Vinen. During his time in Birmingham Chris worked on a wide range of topics in both conventional and high temperature superconductivity, including thermal conductivity, flux quantisation in systems of mixed symmetry, the noise properties of Josephson junctions, the microwave properties of thin film resonators, and phase-slip in superconducting nanobridges. Chris also worked with Joe on the theory of vortex nucleation in superfluid helium, on experiments in two dimensional sheets of ions trapped below the helium surface, and on the paramagnetic Meissner effect. Chris designed and commissioned the Birmingham Laser Ablation Facility for the production of thin film superconductors and was co-chair of the 5-year EPSRC Portfolio programme on thin-film superconductivity. He retired as a senior lecturer in 2010.
