Using composites normally involves a trade-off between in-plane and out-of-plane properties. There is an unprecedented and growing demand for composites, particularly fibre reinforced composites to perform reliably not only in-plane but also out-of-plane. These involve mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic domains. This workshop will focus on recent advances in improving the in-plane and out-of-plane behaviours of composites in multi-physical domains and provide an overview to the state of the art to inform researchers and engineers.

 Relevant topics include but not limited to:

• Design & Optimisation- To enhance in-plane and/or out-of-plane performance;
• Through-thickness reinforcement techniques - To improve out-of-plane performance, such as z-pinning, joining, weaving, stitching and tufting;
• Nano & Micro fillers - To achieve better in-plane and/or out-of-plane performance;
• Repair and Self-healing - To restore in-plane and/or out-of-plane performance;
• Predictive Numerical Models - To understand and optimise in-plane and/or out-of-plane behaviours;
• Advanced Manufacturing processes – To balance in-plane and out-of-plane properties;
• Real-world Applications – from lightning strikes to machining, hygro-thermal-mechanical loading, and compression after impact, where both in-plane and out-of-plane properties play a crucial role;
• Characterisation techniques – To measure in-plane and/or out-of-plane properties such as strength, conductivity and permeability;
• Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques applied in the areas mentioned above.  

Through keynote lectures, technical sessions, and interactive discussions, participants will gain theoretical insights and practical knowledge on designing, evaluating, and deploying next-generation composites with balanced performance in 3D. The workshop also offers a valuable platform for PhD students and early-career researchers to exchange ideas with peers and leading experts.
