Sound waves permeate all our surroundings – in speech, music, bird song, thunder, machines, to mention just a few examples. But sound pervades not just our surroundings in air but in all fluids and solids. Underwater we are familiar with sonar, whale song, medical uses of ultrasound and the simple sound of splashing water. In solids, sound travels with greater speed, familiarised by earthquakes and explosions. Vibration in the ground is also detectable through sensors which can identify the approach of trains and vehicles and even footsteps.
In this entertaining “At Home” seminar we will be exploring some of the fundamentals of acoustic waves and their diverse uses and effects in everyday life.
